Advanced Fellowship in Intensive Care (AFIC)

Advanced Fellowship in Intensive Care (AFIC) is a 1 year course and is being introduced from the year 2024.

Eligibility criteria

Eligibility Criteria for the 1-year AFIC course (Advanced Fellowship in Intensive Care Medicine)

1. Candidate must be a member of the College of Critical Care Medicine.
(If not a member, go to ICUeducation.com to apply for membership).

2. (a) Pathway 1: Candidates who have passed their FCCCM examination:
These candidates can directly apply for AFIC examination.

(b) Pathway 2: Candidates who have NOT passed their FCCCM examination:
(i) Post-graduates candidates who passed their MD/ DNB in Anaesthesia, General Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine or Emergency Medicine.
(ii) In addition, they must have passed any international/National examination in Critical Care/Intensive Care can apply for AFIC examination. (Online examinations in Critical Care without ICU working experience will not be considered)
(iii) These post-graduates have to mandatory attend FCCCM 4-day Orientation course other than their AFIC curriculum requirements.

3. If your post-graduate qualification is not mentioned above and you feel it is directly or indirectly related to above speciality, then you need to contact Academic Council of CCEF for consideration/ approval. (office @ ccef.in).

Please note that the AFIC exit examination will be a physical examination and not online.

Examination Format for the AFIC Examination

1. Assessment of performance throughout the year:

(a). Logbook in Prescribed format to be submitted in digital format. This will contain fully worked up material as per sample logbook under following categories:
(i). ABGs: 10
(ii). Biochemistry: 10
(iii). ECG: 10
(iv). Xrays: 5
(v). CT scans/MRIs: 5
(vi). Drugs: 3
(vii). Equipment: 5
(viii). Microbiology: 5
(ix). Hemodynamic: 3
(x). USG: 3
(xi). ECHO: 3
(xii). Case reports: 5
 
(b). In cases where logbook cannot be made due to privacy restriction on patient data, special permission from the College office for submitting Academic Diary of 150 Academic Credit points may be requested in the beginning of the academic year.

(c). Submit 2 PowerPoint presentations on topics allotted to them with voice over recording.

(d). Submit Proof of attending at least 1 Ventilator workshop and 1 ACLS workshop.

(e). One publication in a Journal (including GJCCM) either as 1 review article or 2 case reports.

(f). Proof of Attending the Orientation program and Crash Course as mandated for each course.
 
2. Assessment at one point in time: [The EXIT Exam]

The exit exam will be held at any one venue for that year. Dates and venue will be announced in advance.
Exit exam will have following Components:

(a). Theory Exams: 2 papers with MCQ/True & False pattern
(b). E-Cases: 3 E-cases that will be a mixture of viva + Clinical examination scenarios across the table.
(c). Communication station: 1 scenario
(d). OSCEs: These will be multiple ACTIVE stations for 12 minutes at each station (2 min to read, 10 min to write) with REST stations in between.

(iii). ECG: 4
(iv). Xrays: 4
(v). CT scans/MRIs: 4
(vi). Ventilator Graphs: 4
(vii). Other ICU Graphs: 4
(viii). Hemodynamic: 4
(ix). USG: 4
(x). ECHO: 4
(xi). Medical statistics: 4
(xii). Microbiology: 4
